It has been some time since short-drama apps were a niche curiosity. According to Sensor Tower, the category generated about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. The quarterly figure had climbed The Dragon King’s Mate online to about $750M by Q1 2026, whereas full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has met at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, all five look identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Dig deeper, however, and they differ on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that change what you pay and where you can watch. Across six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
Before the rounds, here is the entire field on one screen. Prices mirror the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. On market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. If a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source made public the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. Think of the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

ReelShort, the incumbent, still carries the most weight. In August 2022, Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, released it, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also estimates its 2025 revenue at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Holding about 21%, DramaBox launched in April 2023 and is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. ReelShort led $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, and DramaBox ranked first. Often mistyped as “dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax appears to be the same app as Jiuzhou Culture’s ShortTV, and it operates from Hong Kong. The only app with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder is My Drama, even though it is the minnow with 5M+ Android installs. Just outside this lineup, GoodShort has, for context, about 6%. Round winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
This is the round where the apps appear most alike. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave offers a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may be different.
On free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog. Logging in seven days in a row brings 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is via ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so steer clear of them. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.
When it comes to screens, these apps genuinely part ways. ReelShort covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. Thanks to an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort on balance, but My Drama takes the living room.
On raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort wins, thanks to The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s response. Fox’s commitment to 200+ vertical titles over two years gives My Drama the most intriguing pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, purely on volume.
This round goes to DramaWave by a distance. Downloads for offline viewing, on-screen comments and 1080p video feature in its App Store listing, and no rival here is verified to offer offline viewing. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. Also take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms state that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Whichever app you use, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, comfortably.
How you watch determines the right choice, since no single short drama app wins every round. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. Combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. For sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that dwarf everything else in the grid. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, having been ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. With its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels, ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling. Choose one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
